Assessment, Learning and Technology Solutions (ALTS)

ALTS is located in the prestigious University of Nebraska Technology Park and specializes in providing software to assess learning as well as professional development workshops to empower teachers, professors and corporate trainers to increase learning in their own classrooms.

Software

ALTS Assessment Management System ™ software empowers teachers to create accurate assessments and make valid decisions that facilitate learning. This innovative, easy-to-use software package enables teachers to create, edit and administer their own assessments. The system makes data analysis and the tracking of student performance very manageable from the user’s desktop. ALTS software is the kind of tool that every teacher, trainer and professor would like to have. It keeps questions and assessments organized and calculates all of the most important statistics educators need. The statistics are color coded for ease of interpretation and indicate the success level of each student as well as how well each question and each assessment works.

Professional Development

ALTS workshops seek to create Outstanding Teachers. We believe that the development of World-class learning systems is dependent on the development of outstanding teachers. Our workshop series typically begin with sessions on “The human brain and learning” and proceed to provide practical guidelines for creating student-centered learning environments by improving instruction, questioning strategies and assessment. The next full day workshop in the series typically focuses on “Aligning curriculum, assessment and instruction” for clear communication and effective learning. Days 3 and 4 in the ALTS Assessment Workshop Series go into details of test construction and question writing, with specific attention to validity, reliability and equity. After this foundation is laid, future sessions are customized to the specific remaining needs of the participants. These might include topics such as scoring and the creation of rubrics, scoring guides and performance checklists; writing proficiency level descriptions and, standard or cut score setting.

Galen J. Boldt
Chief Operating Officer

Galen is a Nebraska education veteran of 34 years serving students, parents and patrons of 3 different communities as a teacher, coach, and administrator. Upon graduation from high school, he attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota as a student-athlete for 2 years. In 1972 he enrolled at the University of Nebraska in Lincoln, where in 1974 he earned a Bachelor of Science in Education degree with an endorsement in Mathematics.

Galen began his teaching career at Sterling, Nebraska, where he taught Jr./Sr. High Mathematics, coached all sports and directed activities in fine arts for 4 years. In 1979, he received a Masters in Education Administration from UNL and became the Jr./Sr. High Principal at Sterling. This change in responsibility began a 25 year journey as a High School Principal that extended his Sterling service to Tecumseh, Nebraska at Tecumseh Jr./Sr. High School, and Firth, Nebraska at Norris High School. He received a Specialist Degree in Education Administration from UNL in1982, and spent the last five years of his career as the Assistant Superintendent of Norris before he retired in 2008.

Galen was active with the Nebraska Council of School Administrators where he served on the Executive Board from 1992 – 94 when the organization moved from rented space and purchased the facilities that currently house the organization.

Over the course of his membership beginning in 1979 he served as:

  • NSASSP Region I Secretary (1 term) and President (2 terms)
  • NSASSP State Secretary 3(3 years)
  • NSASSP State President 1994
  • NSASSP Public Relations Coordinator (4 years)
  • NSASSP State Coordinator (4 years)

In addition, he was selected as the NSASSP Principal of the Year in 1994 and received their Distinguished Service Award in 1995. Galen has been an advocate for fine arts over the course of his career, and was named the Nebraska Outstanding Administrator by the Nebraska Music Educators Association in 1996. He has worked with the Nebraska Coaches Association over the past 8 years at their annual Sportsmanship Conference, and continues to serve as a presenter.

Shortly after Mr. Boldt became the Asst. Superintendent at Norris Public School in 2003, their school was almost completely destroyed by an F-4 tornado. As a member of the leadership team he led the efforts in cleaning up the rubble and emotional wounds suffered by students, teachers, and the entire community. In addition he directed the replacing, repairing and renewing of the contents of all buildings so that school could open with only a short delay for the fall term.

His leadership helped to allow staff the collaboration and resources necessary to build curriculum maps and digital accounting for the organization of the K-12 curriculum at Norris. Galen supported the Norris efforts to bring meaning and value to the Student-based, Teacher-led Accountability and Reporting System (STARS) and served as a Nebraska Department of Education Assessment Reviewer to visit schools regarding assessment quality.

Mr. Boldt’s mission is to help schools become learner focused by providing resources to allow teachers to bring the science of learning through better assessment to individual classrooms. “The teachers of today do not need to work harder. This business is hard enough the way it is. But we do need to help teachers learn how to work smarter so that more students realize success”.

Strategic Partnerships

With a goal of providing complete assessment, learning, and technology solutions, ALTS has forged several strategic partnerships.

ALTS and Apperson deepen their business relationship

After over 20 months, ALTS and Apperson continue to expand and deepen their business relationship by strategically partnering to bring value to organizations involved in administering large scale assessments. ALTS provides the item banking, test development, data analysis and reporting expertise. ALTS also delivers the online versions of the assessments. Apperson delivers the paper solution!

Apperson has the capability to print and deliver hundreds of thousands of paper assessments with labels and preslugged bubble sheets. The assessments are conveniently packaged in class-sized packets with printed class rosters for ease of distribution. The class rosters and the labels on the assessments and bubblesheets allow test administrators to verify that they have all of the assessments, for the correct students, in their test packets. In addition, bar codes are used to prevent a student’s ID and name from being revealed on the same document. Important for maintaining confidentiality.

When test booklets and bubble sheets are returned to Apperson they have a tried and tested system for verifying that all of the test booklets and answer sheets have been returned from the correct test takers in the correct locations. Their effective communication with ALTS results in timely resolution of discrepancies when they occur.

Apperson is famous for their scanners. In fact, the business relationship started because ALTS was so impressed with Apperson’s scanners. That model of scanner was a lightweight, portable and cost-effective solution for classrooms. Now Apperson’s industrial strength scanners bring value to ALTS’ large scale assessment customers. Scanners that can guarantee a 24-hour turnaround on 200, 000 bubble sheets make it possible for ALTS and Apperson to partner on huge data collection projects and deliver results to large clients in a timely manner with high accuracy.

ALTS and Apperson are pleased to be able to deliver complete solutions to demanding customers in an efficient, service- oriented fashion.

ALTS and partners with Petree of Deliberate Mind fame

Fritz Petree, a learning management thought-leader, is the founder of Petree & Associates and Deliberate Mind. Before starting these two companies, he spent over two decades building World class training and development programs for well-respected companies such as Southwest Airlines and RadioShack. He possesses the unique ability to envision, strategize and provide leadership in the design and implementation of learning technology solutions for a variety of purposes that range from changing corporate cultures to increasing customer satisfaction and profit margins.

ALTS sought out Petree to serve on the ALTS Learning Advisory Board. We look forward to partnering with Petree & Associates and Deliberate Mind to design and conduct cutting edge research of importance to corporate clients. We also anticipate, based on Petree’s track record, that he will recommend high quality, accurate assessment to close the feedback loop for instructors and learners especially in organizations where elearning options are being used. Having this feedback loop in place allows corporate trainers to know whether learning is taking place when employees attend training sessions in person or from remote locations. This is crucial for training departments that need to do return on investment analyses to justify their existence, as well as those excited about doing data analytics and making data-based decisions.

With Petree as an advisor, ALTS anticipates providing assessment, learning and technology solutions for clients, of all sizes, who want to create a learning culture. We appreciate the opportunity to partner with a consultant of Petree’s caliber. Find out more about Petree & Associates and Deliberate Mind.
